Wakayama Access by Train

Wakayama is easy to reach from both Kyoto and Osaka. There are JR express trains to JR Wakayama Station from Kyoto Station and Shin-Osaka Station. 

- Alternatively, take a local train from Tennoji Station on the Hanwa Line (1 hour). 

- There are also trains from Osaka Namba Station on the Nankai Line to Wakayami-shi Station (1 hour). 

- The JR Kisei Line links JR Wakayama Station to Wakayama-shi Station.

Wakaura Fishing Port Ottotto Square

The Wakaura area is itself a designated Place of Scenic Beauty due to its picturesque natural scenery.

On weekends and public holidays, a popular fish market takes place in Ottotto Square at Wakaura Fishing Port. Bustling with visitors, the market sells a wide variety of fresh seafood and processed seafood products.

The surroundings are also rich in history and culture, with numerous shrines and temples, making it an ideal place to visit for seafood lovers or those who simply wish to immerse themselves in Japanese culture.

Wakayama Marina City and Porto Europa

Wakayama Marina City is a resort island that faces the beautiful Wakaura Bay, and features a series of hotels and onsen. Experience an extravagant atmosphere at Porto Europa, an amusement park based on medieval European townscapes.

Access by Car : From the Wakayama Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway, take National Route 42 and Prefectural Road 154 towards Nankai for approximately 13.2 km

You can also visit the seafood market (Kuroshio Ichiba Market), where you can enjoy the dynamic tuna cutting show 3 times a day every day and they also have a souvenir shop!

Kishū Tōshō-gū (紀州東照宮) 

Kishū Tōshō-gū is a Shinto shrine in Wakayama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Built by Yorinobu in 1621, this shrine connected to the Tokugawa Family is also called the Nikko of Kansai. The main shrine and hall of worship are national important cultural properties. Carvings by Jingoro Hidari and murals by Tanyu Kano can be seen in the gongen-zukuri style of buildings. 

There are also 17 treasured articles, such as battle gear, pottery, and clothing. It is known locally by the nickname, Gongen-san.

Wakaura Tenmangu Shrine

Sugawara no Michizane, the god of scholarship, is enshrined here. Along with the Daizaifu Tenmangu of Fukuoka and the Kitano Tenmangu of Kyoto, this is one of the Three Great Kanbyo Shrines. During finals period, it becomes crowded with students who come pray for their success. 

The mural was painted by artists Kano and Tosa, and the main building has been nationally designated as an important cultural property. Both the outside and the inside of it are painted in bright and rich colors.
