Hakodate Morning Market
While my personal highlight of Hakodate was the star-shaped Goryokaku Fort, Hakodate has to offer many other things as well. Mt. Hakodate has an awesome night view and there’s also the famous Hakodate Morning Market near the JR station that I want to introduce today!
If you walk a few steps from the restaurants you’ll bump right into the Hakodate Morning Market (函館朝市) which is mainly a fish market. It opens at 6am (5am in winter) and closes around noon.
Hakodate Asaichi is a cluster of 300-odd shops under the one roof and products on sale include various types of fresh seafood such as crabs (kani), salmon eggs (ikura) and sea urchin (uni), as well as fresh produce such as melons. Many restaurants can be found in the market area, offering fresh seafood breakfasts, such as uni-ikura donburi.
All in all, they had a lot of different crabs there! Something Hakodate also is famous for.

Experience the Thrill of Squid Fishing!
Freshly-caught squids can be seen swimming vigorously around purpose-built fish tanks in the market. A really popular tourist pastime is to try catching these squids. All it takes to catch one is a rod with a hook on the end, so chance your arm! Once you've caught one, a chef will take your catch and prepare squid sashimi for you. Fresh squid sashimi with its glistening translucent flesh is not only a beautiful feast for the eyes, but a real taste sensation as well.
You can crave into fresh sea urchins or scallops right off the shells. Or, you can try seafood donburi, or a bowl of rice fully topped with various sashimi such as salmon, tuna, squid, and salmon roe. You can’t get such a fresh sashimi in other places, so you gotta try!

More Things To Do in Hakodate
There’s more to Hakodate than the morning market. Near the bay area, you can see red-brick warehouses.
There are also Hakodateyama and Goryokaku where you can enjoy a splendid view of Hakodate (the night view is superb!).
There’s Motomachi Church Area where you can see beautiful western-style buildings from the late-1800s to the early-1900s. Another tourist attraction is Onuma Quasi-National Park, which encompasses volcanic Hokkaido Komagatake and two ponds. The combination of clear water pond and the volcanic mountain makes such a gorgeous landscape.
It is strongly recommended that you take enough time to look around and experience every bit of Hakodate!
The seafood looks delicious, hehehe. I love eating anykind of seafood, except kani. Your photo makes me hungry.
